This week in my class

I just want to give a big THANK-YOU to your children who were very nice to the substitute yesterday. I was actually in a meeting with my wife, and we have gotten word that our application to adopt a little boy has been approved. I am very excited and can't wait to tell you all about it in the future posts to come.
As for this week, I am going to teach the children about cold blooded and warm-blooded animals. I will explain the difference between them today and Thursday. Also on Thursday, we will watch another episode of The Magic School Bus. The class loves this series and I have posted the video on my blog for you to watch as well. Friday, we will visit the Irwin Zoo and observe these animals. A permission slip will be sent home today in your child's backpack. If you could have it signed by tomorrow I would appreciate it.
Next Monday, I will continue the lesson by having the students sort animals on cards based on which blood they have. This will also be a day to review what was taught and what information I need to elaborate on. Tuesday will be the quiz.

If you could over the weekend watch the School Bus video and cut out some animals from the internet to have your child sort them, I really think this could benefit the child's learning and understanding of cold and warm blooded animals.

If you have any questions regarding the lesson or would not like your student to participate in the field trip for any reason, please let me know so I can tweak my schedule and/or find an alternative for the child(ren) not going on the field trip.

Great Ideas

I have been getting a few ideas and suggestions about other topics I could possibly teach for the future. Thank you to Mr. Roberto and Ms. Barbara for the ideas.

Roberto had suggested teaching about chemical reactions and also about the planets. I will surely plan on teaching about the planets as soon as I am finishing my curriculum of deforestation.

Barbara had suggested teaching about dichotomous keys when it comes to animals and she also suggested teaching about plants. I will gladly add the keys to my lesson plan for this weeks curriculum.

Thanks to both of you for these wonderful ideas. Don't hesitate to come up with other ideas parents and guardians. Tweaking my lesson plans are not a huge hassle, plus it can help me learn more about the subjects as well.

Have a great rest of the weekend and don't forget THERE IS NO CLASS TOMORROW. CLASSES BEGIN ON TUESDAY!

Introduction and Week 4 activities

Hello parents and welcome to my blog. I am doing this blog so that you can catch up on what your child has learned from each day or week. Feel free to post a comment about any questions you may have over the homework assigned for your child.

This week, your children have been learning about the digestive system and the body parts that help this system go smoothly. On Monday we watched a Magic School Bus video on the digestive system which can be easily found at your local library or on YouTube. We had then learned about the food pyramid or plate and that we need to eat each category to live a healthy life on Tuesday and Wednesday. Thursday in class, we had dissected frogs online and studied how food traveled through it. Lastly, on Friday we had a test over the digestive system and the graded test should be in your child's take home folder.

Below are a few questions you could ask your child about the digestive system.
1. Which category of the food pyramid or plate should you consume more of?
a) grains                         or                     b) dairy

2. Which comes first in the digestive system?
a) small intestine              b) large intestine                 c) capillaries

3. List where each food item belongs in the food pyramid or plate.
a) Cream cheese
b) Strawberries
c) Salmon
d) Croissant

Again if you have any questions regarding homework or want to share an idea for a lesson that I could incorporate feel free to post a comment! I look forward to seeing your children on class on Tuesday. Enjoy the three day weekend!
